Ahoy, FMSEA North Members and members from other regions! Maria Sgambati of the University of Florida’s Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory has an important announcement below:
The University of Florida’s Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory will be holding Open Houses Saturday October 18 and Sunday October 19 from 9am-3pm. This open house corresponds with Cedar Key’s annual Seafood Festival, which often draws thousands of visitors to town. Our open houses are conducted with our partners, the US Fish and Wildlife Service to help raise awareness about the conservation, research and education missions of our organizations. But the big draw for the open house is the rare opportunity to visit the Cedar Keys Light Station.
Volunteers are needed for touch tanks, seine netting and tide pool stations on the south beach, and drink and t-shirt sales.
There is also the opportunity to spend either Friday night or Saturday night or both nights in the historic lighthouse.
The U.F. boat schedule is as follows:
Friday October 17th – 11am – trawl with Kenny and Maria and arrive at Seahorse Key around 2pm. Set up touch tanks.
Saturday October 18th – depart Cedar Key 8am, return Cedar Key 4pm
Sunday October 19th – depart Cedar Key 8am, return Cedar Key 4pm
Please let me know if you are interested and specifics of when you can come. Preference is for all day volunteers to ease boat transportation but other limited boat transportation is available if you can only come for part of the day.
