INMEA President-elect Howard Rutherfordn case you missed the announcement (or don’t subscribe to scuttlebutt), FMSEA’s very own Howard Rutherford (former West Central Regional Director, former FMSEA President) was just elected president-elect of our national organization, National Marine Educators Association. Given his tremendous leadership in FMSEA and at his home institution (Pier Aquarium/Secrets of the Sea Marine Exploration Center & Aquarium), he is sure to do Florida proud! This is just one more example of FMSEA’s role as a leader among the national chapters. Congratulations, Howard!

If you haven’t already registered for the national conference, it’s not too late! Visit the conference website to NMEA 2013 Conference Logoregister today! The planning committee has been working hard to provide a great schedule of events and attendees won’t be disappointed! If you DO plan on attending, please let me know so we have an idea of who will be there so we can all coordinate our outfits.

Many thanks to those who have responded about donations for the Chapter Basket! I must receive all donations by July 18th to have them at the conference. If you’d like to make a donation but aren’t able to get it to me by then, please send a full description, the retail value and an artistic rendering of the item in the medium of your choice by July 18th and we can make arrangements to ship it to the winning bidder of the basket. If you’re planning on bringing the item with you to Mobile, please still let me know ahead of time so we can taunt the other chapters.

Twitter headerFinally, if you aren’t able to be in Mobile for #nmea13, you can still participate through social media! Just as we did at #fmsea13, folks at the national conference will be tagging tweets, facebook updates, instagram pics, G+ posts and more with the official conference hashtag – #nmea13. You can use that hashtag to view all the related posts and keep track of what’s going on, but you can ALSO be part of the action yourself by sending questions/comments using the hashtag. The social media crew for NMEA will be monitoring and responding to posts on twitter and facebook and we want to hear from you! If you’re not sure what I’m talking about but want to get involved, just shoot me a message offline and I’ll make sure you’re all set!

I hope everyone is having a great summer and I hope to see many of you in Mobile!
